a break from the winter monotony

I know that winter wasn’t real bad this year…but there were still plenty of days we didn’t feel like going outside!

We headed to the Children’s Museum in Coralville one Friday to break up the routine of being inside. We’d never been there, but had gotten free kid’s tickets with our donation to IPTV last year so thought we’d try it out.

This was Evan’s favorite place. He loved launching the rocket that he built with daddy.

Well…next to this…you built your own car and then sent it racing down the track. We had to pull him away.

Hot air ballooning.

Ellie…fashion model?

Ev and I tried our hand at the flight simulator. He thought it was hilarious to crash into the ground over and over again…so we didn’t actually spend much time flying.

The cube of mirrors – this was awesome. Both kids loved this (and it wasn’t just the kids – i got in too!)

What would a trip be without a stop at Chick-fil-a? Peppermint shake anyone?  Ev agrees they’re the best!

And a carousel ride to finish the day.

What a great day spent inside!

does 3 minutes define me?

So, in keeping up with my New Year’s resolutions…in particular, the one about exercising one more day this year than last, I jumped on the library bandwagon and into the 100 day challenge. The goal: to do some sort of physical something for 30 minutes a day for 100 consecutive days. Easy enough, right? I was thinking so…until my schedule got insane.

And by insane…I mean just as busy as everyone else…running from one thing to the next, always feeling one step behind and always missing at least one thing I was supposed to be doing or taking somewhere. Everybody does this, right?

My workout schedule is usually a little hectic, but I can manage it…with the wonderful help of the hubs – who willingly gets the kids ready for bed EVERY night without complaint. Yes, ladies…I said WILLINGLY. He’s all mine…you can’t have him.

You’d usually find me at the gym Mondays from 8:15 until 9:15 p.m., Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1:15 until 2:00 (sometimes with an extra weight session on Tuesday nights with the workout buddy), Thursdays from 5:15 – 6:00, and Fridays from 2:15-3:15.

Thursdays got a little crazier recently when I signed up for the Waverly Police Department’s Citizen’s academy. This is a 10 week class all about what happens behind the scenes in the WPD. It is AMAZING. I love every minute…but it took away my time to workout on Thursdays…and I knew i wouldn’t feel like starting my workout at 9 p.m. (or later…depending on when class lets out).

So…long story short…had to come up with a different plan. I am not a quitter…so making Thursday a rest day was not an option – at least not until this 100 day challenge is over. I now workout Thursdays at lunch. I get an hour for lunch, but by the time I change into workout clothes, do about a half hour of exercise, and change back, the hour is pretty well gone.

This Thursday, a friend and I ran outside. I’m so excited that spring is happening and we can get outside and up our Vitamin D intakes…but we only had time/the course only took us 27 minutes. I had honestly planned to come home after class (which ended at 9:40 last night) and do another 15 minute ab workout, but came home with a headache instead. So, that was out.

In trying to decide what is enough…I find myself asking…does these 3 minutes define me? Did I fail? Technically yes.

Nathan, being the man of sound judgment that he is, suggested I round up. I love him. I wish letting it go was that easy.

I just want to do everything I absolutely can to meet those goals I set…no matter how lofty.

So as I sit here thinking about failure and what it means…I also find myself asking…since I did way more than 30 minutes today (and most other days) can I just count that?

I guess I will just attempt to be content knowing that I did something yesterday…and tomorrow gives me an opportunity to do it better. Bring on Day #61.

a trip downtown

Finally getting around to blogging these pictures. I put them on Facebook shortly after our trip to the police station and then they got lost in the new computer shuffle until right now…

Enjoy.

We went with Beth to drop off some sweet treats to the Waverly Police Department…and I’ll admit it, although she never would…we took Evan in hopes that by bringing a cute little boy we’d get to see the department’s SUV.

Sadly, we didn’t get to see the real thing, but Captain Eggleston was kind enough to let Evan drive his mini SUV around his office for a little while.

And then he gave him a police badge and this kid had a friend for life. He still calls it his “badger” that the police man gave him and wears it when he and his sister fight the bad guys at home. Is that seriously cute or what?

Thanks to the WPD for making this little boy’s day!

And we may not have gotten to see the vehicle we wanted to, but the substitute Bremer County Sheriff car was enough for Evan.
