crazy hair day for Evan

The daycare where Evan goes celebrated the week of the young child this year with different theme days…

one was crazy hair day…

Now there isn’t much you can do with short boy hair to make it crazy, but Evan was excited to try something – i think probably because he’s seen so many “crazy hair Saturday’s” with his sister that he was beginning to be a bit jealous his hair won’t fit into a ponytail (or several).

This is what we came up with – a mini spike – and some added color.

You may be looking at this picture thinking…I don’t see much difference…

There is a story there.

We go out onto the deck to put in the color and I wrap a towel around his shoulders and have him hold it, so we don’t get it on his clothes. He first questions me about the towel – why does he need it? It this going to hurt?

I start to spray the first color (that’s right, I said first…as he had chosen purple, yellow AND red), and he starts freaking out – running away from me, and waving his arms yelling “Mommy, when are you going to be done??”

So, I stop…and tell him we can be done. We don’t have to do ANY more. He says…but mommy, I want yellow and red too.

So, we start in on the second color – same story…screaming, waving, freaking out.

And so we continued through all 3 colors.

I’m sure the neighbors thought I was torturing him.

maple syrup festival

Last year was the first time we’d been able to attend the maple syrup festival at Hartman Reserve, and it was such a great time that when the weather prevented us from going to see family in Wisconsin that weekend, we decided to go back!

This time we made sure to take the camera!

Waiting in line for pancakes can be dreadfully long…but here it seems to go by quickly!

Ev with his new best friend the turtle.

Ellie – with her new best friend?? I for one am hoping she doesn’t think we need one of these at home. I think that’s what Ev thought too. I couldn’t get him to go near it.

“Catching” our breakfast is always a highlight of the day. He helped Ev out a little…but on the second round, Ellie stepped right up and caught hers!

Creepy picture – I think he’s probably thinking “mom…stop taking my picture so I can eat my pancakes!”

After breakfast, we ventured outside to practice tapping the trees…and to try our hand at collecting sap to boil down for next year’s syrup. Despite the chilly temps, Ellie was quite into the whole process this year. Ev? I think he was running through the woods at this point. Part of me thinks I should have just let him go.

But the highlight of their day…probably the bus ride to and from the Reserve. My poor children, who live a block from their school, only get to ride the bus on special occasions…and they are thrilled beyond belief when they do.

a big birthday girl

Ahh…the birthday.

I can’t believe she’s 6. Of course, I can’t believe her brother is almost 4. Can someone please make time stand still? Although I do appreciate that with getting older comes a little less attitude (at least at 6. I’m sure this will change as we near 11, 12, and Lord help me 13.)

There was no “fancy” cake this year – Ellie had decided she wanted a snowflake cake for her birthday, which seemed easy enough to do!

We frosted with buttercream (purple of course), and then used crystal sugar to put a snowflake on top.

I got the pattern online – just printed a snowflake picture off of google and then used a thick plastic to make a stencil for the top of the cake. I thought it turned out pretty well. And the sugar really made it look like the fuzzy edges of a real snowflake.

For her birthday, one of the presents we gave her was a build a bear kit. She is really into doing projects, and so we knew she’d love it. You can tell that she doesn’t get to do all the steps all that often though because after we stuffed the bear and I was showing her how to sew it, I gave her the needle and told her to go ahead…she just looks up at me wide-eyed and says “i get to sew??”

She did a fine job!

And then Cinderella Teddy Bear was finished! (No…I don’t know where we come up with these names.)

She loves her! Cinderella has even been to sharing at school (during B week of course).

another sport to try

We hadn’t signed Ellie up for any community recreation programs since t-ball last summer when we noticed they offered a soccer session this winter.

We thought maybe since soccer had more activity than t-ball, she’d enjoy it a little more. We were right.

I can’t blame her for not liking t-ball…I, myself, don’t appreciate baseball. I guess it’s just doesn’t move fast enough for us.

She really seemed to get into it…and it was a great way to burn off some energy Saturday mornings this winter!
